How to Save Telephone Numbers to A WordPress Database

I hope this goes without saying but when you are saving data to a WordPress database you should always do so with security in mind first and foremost. And not to be one who instills fear in the hearts of the adventurous coders out there, but one misstep when interacting with a WordPress database can potentially lead to vulnerabilities for either you or your client.

That is why I wanted to share a simple method I discovered for saving a telephone number via the Customize UI the correct way. In turn I will also show you how to retrieve that phone number from your WordPress database and display it in a humanly readable fashion on your website.

Firestarter: A Destiny 1 Raid Montage

To celebrate the end of its lifecycle, my clan and I decided to put together a montage celebrating our time spent raiding in the game over the past three years.

Swag for A Cause

Purchase our tee and help support a worthy cause.

Now that our Destiny clan has a swanky new logo, we thought it only fitting to put it on a t-shirt so we can proudly show our affiliation. But none of us are remotely interested in profiting from selling apparel so we opted for printing-on-demand with Teespring where 100% of our profits will be donated to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Whether you are looking to represent as a member or simply want to show support for a worthy cause, we have something for you.

Star Wars: Rogue One Cast Announced

Star Wars: Rogue One Cast Members
The cast of the upcoming Star Wars: Rogue One film set for a December 2016 release.

My not-so-inner nerd got excited when I read that principal photography for the 2016 Stars Wars: Rogue One has begun with an official cast announcement.

Rogue One takes place before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope and will be a departure from the saga films but have elements that are familiar to the Star Wars universe. It goes into new territory, exploring the galactic struggle from a ground-war perspective while maintaining that essential Star Wars feel that fans have come to know.

Add a Custom WordPress Avatar to Defaults List

For years I have been using a simple function to add a custom WordPress avatar image to the list of defaults in the Discussion section of the admin dashboard. You have probably seen some iteration of my code solution elsewhere and there was nothing particularly magical about it other than it worked perfectly … until today.

Iconjar: An App That Helps You Organize Icon Sets

Like Spring cleaning, I have been putting off finding a solution that would make it easy for me to organize icon sets I use in my design projects. I don’t know about you but I have sets on my MacBook, my iMac, in Drive, and Dropbox. Whenever it is time to find that “right set,” I have undoubtedly forgotten where I stored it.

I am pretty excited to have recently found Iconjar, a OSX application that helps me corral all of the disparate sets I’ve been hoarding lately. The interface is clean and simple but hits the mark on key features. I can visually browse entire sets with the click of a button or tag icons for quick searches. And, if that isn’t enough to whet your whistle, how about the seamless integration with Sketch, Adobe Illustrator, and Photoshop?

I have been playing around with it now for a couple of days and I cannot sing its praises enough. I wish the app supported Dropbox for synching but I heard through the grapevine it’s in the works. If you haven’t already, download a free copy while it’s in public beta.

Display The WordPress Featured Image Caption

With the redesign of this blog, I knew I wasn’t going to be using the WordPress featured image functionality all that often. When I did, I wanted the ability to show image attributions for copyright holders or to give props back to a colleague using image captions.

After a quick cursory Google search, I realized what I wanted to accomplish wasn’t difficult and there are several published solutions available. I found an answer which functionally returned the WordPress image caption but fell a bit short as it would display an empty figcaption element when no caption had been set.

Ciel and I crashed mom’s work event where she scored her very first palleta. Judging by the tranquil look on her face, I foresee more of these treats in the future.
